WYUA History

In preparation for the 5th Worldwide Uchinanchu Festival in 2011, the very first “Youth/Student Executive Office” was established to preserve and carry on the hopes and wishes of our ancestors for the future generation. Through networking with next generation Uchinanchu (Okinawans) overseas, we were able to hold a International Youth Conference. Young representatives from America, Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, English, Hawai’i, Peru, and Okinawa gathered together at this conference to discuss what we want to do for the island in which we love so dearly.

As a result of the conference, the World Youth Uchinanchu Association (WYUA) was formed and the organization’s missions and future activities were proposed to the Okinawa Prefectural Governor. As we prepare towards the 6th Worldwide Uchinanchu Festival in 2016, a proposal was announced to hold an annual Worldwide Youth Uchinanchu Festival (Okinawa Wakamono Taikai) in different countries. In 2012, the first Okinawa Wakamono Taikai was hosted in Brazil.
